The chrome and the bamboo safety razors on their stands, on a marble basin top in morning light

Rated Excellent on Trustpilot

Your gift by his basin, in use every morning

  • Easy to learn, a pleasure to use

THIS RAZOR ASKS FOR A LITTLE CARE.

It needs a light touch and a few unhurried minutes. If he shaves on autopilot, a cartridge suits him better. Weโ€™d rather say this now.

  • โ€œTook a little while to get used to it without cuts. Once you get the hang of it (light touch, let the weight do the work) itโ€™s much more comfortable. No bumps or irritation either.โ€

The handle is the bait

  1. The handle is cheap on purpose. It only takes one brandโ€™s refills.
  2. The refills are where they make it back: ยฃ108 to ยฃ162.50 a year.
  3. This razor is bought once. Its blades are 50p each. Kept for life.

โ€œIn my shop the handle stays. Only the blade changes.โ€

One blade on every client, in a razor I have kept for years. The Kronos Safety Razor takes any double-edge blade at 50p, so a year of shaves costs about ยฃ25.

There is a reason why barbers have used a single blade for centuries.

The part that nicks.

A blade nicks at its corners. Kronos encloses them; only the edge meets skin.

In their own words

Unprompted comments left for us in public.

Your first shave in three steps.

  1. Know what you're holding

Three parts, one blade. The guard shields the blade. The head sets the angle. The handle carries the weight.

  2. Let the weight work

Don't press. The razor is heavy enough. Hold it like a pen and let it glide.

  3. Use short strokes

An inch at a time. Lift, move down, go again. Keep the skin taut.

“The trick is don't treat your morning shave as a chore to be rushed; look upon it as a pleasure, take your time.”

Three things people ask before giving it

  • Will he find it fiddly?

Three pieces, and the blade drops in. The corners sit enclosed, the part that nicks.

  • Will he actually use it?

It takes about a week to learn. After that it is simply his razor, at about ten pence a shave.

  • What if it is wrong for him?

A hundred days to decide. If it is not for him, send it back. Keep it, and it has a lifetime warranty.

The long answer

Why a good gift gets shelved

Most grooming gifts ask him to change a habit with no way in. A safety razor is the clearest case: hand it over without the first week explained and it goes in a drawer.

So the head is enclosed, covering the corners of the blade, the part that nicks, and it forgives him while he learns.

What he gets from it

One blade cuts the hair level with the skin, where five blades lift it and cut it below. Fewer passes, and nothing left underneath to grow back in.

Blades are ยฃ2.50 for five, about ten pence a shave, and any standard double-edge blade fits. There is nothing to top up from one brand.

What it asks of him

About a week of short strokes and no pressure before it is second nature. If he wants a two-minute shave done without thinking, it is the wrong gift.

If it turns out not to be for him, there are a hundred days to send it back. Keep it, and the razor has a lifetime warranty.

Is a safety razor a good gift?

It is if he will use it. The Kronos Safety Razor encloses the corners of its blade, the part that nicks, so he can use it from his first week.

What if he has never used one?

It takes about a week of short strokes and no pressure. The enclosed head forgives him while he learns.

Can he send it back?

Yes, within a hundred days. Keep it, and the razor has a lifetime warranty.

Will he be tied to buying your blades?

No. A Kronos razor takes any standard double-edge blade, and Kronos blades fit any double-edge razor.

How much do the blades cost?

About ten pence a shave. Twenty blades for ยฃ10, each good for five to seven shaves.

Is a single sharp blade more likely to cut him?

With the right technique, no. The Kronos Safety Razor encloses the corners of its blade, the part that nicks, so only the safe edge meets skin. Sharper means less pressure, and less irritation.

A hundred days to make up your mind

Let him shave with it properly, for as long as he likes. If it is not for him, send it back.
