How to Use Your Safety Razor

Getting started

Safety razors feel different from cartridge razors, but within a couple of shaves most people never want to go back. Here's what to know before your first use.

Step 1: Prepare your skin

Wet your face with warm water for at least 30 seconds, or shave after a hot shower. This softens the hair and opens the pores. Apply shaving soap or cream in circular motions using a brush or your fingers.

Step 2: Load your blade

Unscrew the handle from the head. Place one double-edge blade across the top plate, then replace the head and tighten firmly.

Step 3: The right angle

Hold the razor at roughly 30 degrees to your skin. This is shallower than you might expect. If the handle is nearly parallel to your face, you're close. Let the weight of the razor do the work: no pressing required.

Step 4: Short, light strokes

Shave with the grain (the direction of hair growth) for your first pass. Use short strokes of 2 to 3 cm, rinsing after every few strokes. A second light pass across or against the grain is fine once you're comfortable.

Step 5: Rinse and finish

Rinse with cold water to close the pores. Pat dry, then apply an aftershave balm or moisturiser. The blade does not need removing after each use.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pressing down — the razor is heavier than a cartridge for a reason. No pressure needed.
  • Too steep an angle — steep angles cause irritation. Keep it shallow.
  • Rushing — short, deliberate strokes give a better result than long fast ones.
