Shaving Your Head With a Safety Razor

Yes, you can shave your head with a Kronos safety razor. A single blade sits closer to the scalp than a cartridge and clogs far less, so once you have the technique it gives a clean, comfortable finish. The scalp is less forgiving than the face, so there is a short learning curve. Go slowly at first and it soon becomes second nature.

See it done: Paul's head shave

Paul, a friend of Kronos, filmed a full head shave using our razor. Watch how he works around the curve of the scalp.

How to shave your head with a safety razor

  1. Prep with warmth. Shave after a warm shower, or hold a warm, damp towel over your head for a minute. Soft hair and open pores make all the difference.
  2. Lather well. Use a quality shaving soap or cream and a brush to lift the hair and protect the skin.
  3. Hold the razor at about 30 degrees. Let the weight of the handle do the work. Pressure is what causes nicks, not the blade.
  4. Short strokes, with the grain first. Work in small sections. For a closer finish, re-lather and take a second pass across the grain.
  5. Mind the curve. The back and crown are hard to see, so go by feel. Keep the skin taut with your free hand and slow right down around the ears and hairline.
  6. Rinse and care. Rinse cold to settle the skin, then finish with a light balm or moisturiser.

An honest note

Your first head shave will take longer than a cartridge, and that is normal. The reward is a closer shave with less irritation, fewer ingrown hairs, and replacement blades that cost a fraction of cartridge refills. Take your time, and the routine soon becomes its own quiet ritual.
